2014 - A Banner Year for Quality

President David Harrison said it best, the Quality Awards is one of his favorite events of the year. And it's easy to see why. One after another, teachers, full professors, assorted staff - full and part-time, teams large and small, all gave eloquent testimony as to why the college is the essential place it has become.

From a list that began with 125 nominees, Daniel Hare, Theresa Kegley, Mark Mitchell and Julie Posey were the gracious Distinguished Teaching winners.

"It's our students who inspire us," said Kegley. "Truly, their stories, their hopes for a better future. They're the ones who are distinguished."

"To be honored by one's peers," noted Daniel Hare, "is humbling beyond belief. "

"I also realize that with this award comes one of the toughest tasks in my twenty years here," admitted Mark Mitchell. "And that is to choose only four distinguished faculty members next year. Because I feel our campus is full of distinguished professors, associate professors and faculty members."
Jon Lundquist and David Busch were named Distinguished Full Professors for their years of innovative and inspiring service.

IT's Betty Richardson took home the Staff Employee of the Year honors. She was cited for her great work attitude and extra efforts on behalf of SAC's charitable work. The Testing Center's Catherine Giles is the first recipient of the new Part-time Employee of the Year award. Her willingness to work evenings and weekends in the Testing Center was but one reason for her nomination.

Generation One Trailblazers received Gold for helping first generation students navigate the college experience. Brian Seeger led the Transient Student Team to a Silver Award. The team helped boost "guest student" enrollment by 14%. Denis Marketos, Lee Wayand and Leslie Smith corralled a Silver for creating an interactive online Statistics course to promote retention.

Celebrating Continuous Improvement

The 2013 Quality Awards winners were named at a luncheon ceremony held June 20 in the Conference Center and live-streamed to the campus.

The Awards recognize the efforts of our faculty, staff and administration for setting standards of continuous improvement that produce measurable annual goals and contribute to the College's accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission.
The Distinguished Teaching Awards are given to faculty members nominated by their students for excellence in the classroom and reviewed by their peers for course content, instructional methods, knowledge of the subject matter and more. This year's winners are Beth Barnett, Professor in Developmental Mathematics; Dr. Rick Bartlett, Associate Professor in Business Management; Eric Kenz, Instructor in Biological Sciences; and Fauna Stout, Assistant Professor in Medical Assisting Technology.

The Staff Employee of the Y13 seoyear was selected from the past 12 Employees of the Month for displaying outstanding teamwork, going above and beyond their work description, and making contributions to the college. The 2013 Staff Employee of the Year is Susan Thomas, representative in the Telephone Information Center, who was originally nominated by a student and his parent to recognize her outstanding assistance with enrollment and registration right through to the student's graduation.

The Distinguished Full Professor Awards were established to recognize tenured professors at the college who have contributed outstanding service to their department, to the College and to their profession. It also recognizes those who have completed scholarly work, teaching innovations, student advising, and community service that represents Columbus State. The 2013 Distinguished Full Professors are Dr. Jeffrey Bates, Professor of Environmental Science, Safety and Health; Kelly Hogan, Professor of Developmental Education; Dr. Brenda Johnson, Professor of Veterinary Technology; Steven O'Neal, Professor of Landscape Design and Management; and Darrell Minor, Professor of Mathematics.

The final awards of the afternoon were the Quality Team Awards, which recognize cross-functional teams for their yearlong projects to enhance or improve one or more of the college's values. Thirteen teams submitted applications for the 2013 awards.

Silver Awards were given to two teams, the Columbus Africentric Early College High School Bootcamp Team—who designed a program to improve high school students' results on the COMPASS Placement Tests; and the Columbus State Course Evaluation System Team—who developed a campus-wide online course evaluation tool that met the needs of faculty and solved numerous problems with the older system.
