The Generation One Trailblazers (GOT) will offer a professional development opportunity for faculty called “Supporting the Success of First Generation College Students.” The workshop will describe how best to support students who are among the first in their family to attend college.

This is an opportunity to learn more about an often-overlooked population, especially at two-year colleges.  Among topics to be discussed:

  • The plight of the first generation student
  • Update on current research concerning first-gen students and academic success
  • Results of GOT survey conducted with first-gen students at Columbus State
  • How faculty can support their success in the classroom and beyond

Two sessions will be offered to accommodate faculty schedules. Register:
Wednesday, February 25, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., TL 343

Thursday, February 26, from 2:30-3:30 p.m., TL 215

‘Spirit Day’ is Feb. 18

Columbus State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will play conference rival Cincinnati State at home on Wednesday, February 18—women tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s team follows at 7:30 p.m. Midway through the season, the Columbus State women’s basketball team is making some nice strides under Coach Joel Renner. With a 16-3 record, the team is just outside the National Junior College Athletic Association Div. II Top-20 national poll. Depending on their performance on the hardwood in the next week or two, they could easily break into the Top 20. Everyone is encouraged to attend Spirit Day, and admission is free to all employees, students, and kids under 18.

Qualified individuals have been instructed to call Hands On Central Ohio at 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment.
