Coordinator takes on two roles and excels

After applying for and receiving the Program Coordinator position in the Justice and Safety Department, Trish Haaser found herself with two jobs to perform—her new job and her old one.

“I do not know how we would have made it this far without Trish,” said Curt Laird, chair of the department.

“She continued to perform the administrative tasks that were part of her office associate role while learning a variety of new skills for her transition.  I don’t recall her ever complaining about it, or struggling with her additional responsibilities!”

Laird nominated Haaser for Staff Employee of the Month, which she was awarded at the December 7 First Wednesday meeting.

“Trish excels above anyone on this campus in her care for students,” continued Laird. “She recently assisted two students who were homeless, helping them to find services to obtain housing. Even if it’s simply listening to student concerns and offering thoughtful comments, she can always be counted upon to care for students’ welfare.

“I think students seek her out because of her comforting nature. I think at times, professors can be difficult to approach. Trish aids these students in a way that many faculty cannot. Her attitude in helping these students succeed is what distinguishes her from her peers.”

A little ‘Pepper’ is good for you!

In an effort to relieve a bit of stress for students studying for final exams in the Library, Pepper the Therapy Dog visited recently for pats and hugs. Should you need a bit of stress relief yourself, feel free to stop by the Library on Monday, December 12, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, when Pepper will visit again on the second floor!








OnBase app to be upgraded

Information Technology will upgrade the OnBase application to a new version (16) on Saturday, December 10. OnBase is the college’s business process management software. The upgrade work will begin at 9:00 a.m. and completed by 1:00 p.m. The application will be available on Monday, December 12, to all users. This upgrade will be transparent to users and will not change any work currently processed in the application.

Spots still open in PONO Learning Community

logoThere are a few openings left to join the Spring 2017 PONO Diversity Learning Community.

PONO is a group open to both employees and students. The group meets for eight weeks during the semester to discuss different diversity-related topics including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, socio-economic status, and more. PONO provides a great opportunity to build community with others, share your story, and gain new perspectives. CCSSE 2017 coming in March

Columbus State will participate in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) during Spring Semester 2017. Faculty will be contacted with more details as soon as the specific course sections to be surveyed are listed. If your course is selected, you will need to set aside 50 minutes during one of your class sessions between the end of March and middle of April to have the survey administered to students. Employees will also have the opportunity to volunteer to proctor the survey. Place your course materials on reserve in the Library

Reserve items are an import source of course materials for students. In preparation for spring semester, the Library seeks materials that faculty wish to place on “Reserve” status for students to borrow.

To place items on reserve, faculty must fill out a reserve request form. Email the completed form to Circulation Supervisor Vanessa Langhurst. Please allow five business days for processing.

Important information to share with students

  • Reserves are for in-Library use only.
  • Reserves are kept behind the Library Circulation Desk (Columbus) or the Learning Center Service Desk (Delaware).
  • Students must have their Cougar ID or a state-issued photo ID to check out items.
  • Reserves typically have a two-hour checkout (for use in the Library.)
  • There is a $1.00 fine per each hour late.
  • Students who do not return a reserve the same day it's due will incur a $50 fine.


Gospel Ensemble to perform tonight

The Gospel Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Emma Easton, will perform a concert, “Christmas Gospel Explosion,” on Thursday, December 8, (TONIGHT) at 7:00 p.m. in Nestor Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

In addition to the Gospel Vocal Ensemble, the showcase features the Jelani dancers, gospel jazz vocalist Edwin Channels, Harmony - an acapella group, soloist Tanya Payne, and other local talent!

Season’s Greetings from Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Travel

As we near the end of the calendar year and the holiday break, you are encouraged to submit invoices that you would like to have paid before the break, by Wednesday, December 21. If they are not received by then they cannot be processed for payment prior to the holiday break.

Also as a reminder, employee reimbursement checks not picked up from the cashier’s windows by Thursday December 22, will be mailed to the mailing address of record.

Payroll deadlines for holiday period

For the pay period ending December 15, 2016, with a pay day of December 23, 2016:

Employee web time entry is due Thursday, December 15, at 11:00 p.m.

Supervisory web time approval is due Friday, December 16, at 12:00 p.m. (noon)

Due to the short processing time for this pay period, all other payroll information is due in the Payroll Office by Thursday, December 15, at 5:00 p.m.  Anything received after this time will be posted to the first payroll of 2017.


Holiday Trolley Stop is Saturday!

A wonderful holiday tradition in the Discovery District continues this Saturday, December 10, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. when the Holiday Trolley Stop arrives! There will be lots of great things to “Discover” on this festive and free trolley ride through the District, stopping at the Topiary Park, Columbus Metropolitan Library, The Hills Market Downtown, Thurber House/The Jefferson Avenue Center, State Auto’s Nativity display, Columbus Museum of Art, First Congregational Church, Kelton House Museum and Garden, Snowden-Gray House and Heritage Museum, and more. There is free parking in Motorists parking lots next to the Topiary Park.

Start at the Columbus Metropolitan Library at 1:00 p.m. to kick off the Holiday Trolley Hop. There will be surprise guests and fun in store!
