Thurgood Marshall Lecture Series continues today at noon

Eric Neubauer, professor in Social Sciences, will speak today at noon on “Segregated Housing in the North,” the third lecture in the Thurgood Marshall Lecture Series. James Stewart, associate professor in Social Sciences, will present “The Biology of Race” on Wednesday, February 17. The final lecture Monday, February 29, will be presented by Professor Bob Fitrakis, who will speak about “The Assault on Voting Rights in America.”  All lectures will be held at 12:00 p.m. in the Multimedia Studio in the Library.


Black History Month celebration features journalist Feb. 17


The annual Columbus State Black History Month Celebration, featuring Nikole Hannah-Jones, will be held Wednesday, February 17, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St. Hannah-Jones is an investigative journalist notable for her coverage of civil rights in the United States.

On Thursday, February 18, “Poets in Black” will be held from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Library Media Studio. Both events are free and open to the public.


Nominations sought for Distinguished Professors

Each year, members of the college community have the opportunity to nominate a tenured faculty member for the Distinguished Full Professor Awards, given in June of each year at the Quality Awards ceremony.  Distinguished Full Professors are recognized for their continuing contributions to Columbus State in areas of community service, scholarship, teaching innovation, leadership, and other professorial achievements. Candidates for the award may be self-nominated or nominated by colleagues, students, or members of the community. To see the full qualifications for the award, view the nomination form online here. To nominate a candidate for the 2016 Distinguished Full Professor Award, please send the full name and department of the professor you wish to nominate to Deborah Plummer in Human Resources by Monday, February 29.


Nominate your team for a Quality Award

The Columbus State Team Awards recognize groups that have had the most impact on the continuous improvement on the College and the students by incorporating the values and strategic goals set forth by the Board of Trustees. The awards will be made at the Quality Awards ceremony in June, and include cash awards for up to three winning teams.

The Quality Team Awards recognize outstanding team efforts in the contribution of time, energy and talent that result in an outcome improving one of the College’s processes or values;  the development and implementation of a college initiative, activity, program or service that resulted in a cost benefit or cost savings for the college; the development and implementation of an innovative teaching and learning activity, program or service that resulted in an increase in student success and attainment; or fostering the college vision to improve services and yield  improved access to students.

Teams must include at least three members, who can be faculty, staff or administrators. The application is online here. Completed applications must be mailed (no electronic submissions accepted) to the Human Resources office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, to the attention of Carmelita Boyer.

Win with Strengths offered Feb. 18

Win with your Strengths, to be offered Thursday, February 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., is an introduction to strengths-based language where you’ll learn more about your own strengths and the strengths of others.  Prior to the class, you will take the online StrengthsFinder assessment and determine your top five “Signature Strengths.” Seats are limited!
