More than 800 students received degrees during Autumn 2017 commencement

On Friday, December 15, Columbus State held its 195th commencement. More than 800 students received Columbus State associate degrees, and hundreds attended the graduation ceremony at the Celeste Center. Watch a recap of the ceremony in the video above.

New Columbus State website is now live

On Sunday, the College launched its new website. When you log on to cscc.edu, you’ll see a new homepage and navigation. The new website design is aimed at improving all aspects of the site, including design, content, and navigation. The goal? Create a site that engages prospective students and embodies the Columbus State brand. Of course, improvements are aimed at making it easier for current students and community partners to use as well. The new website is also easy to view on smartphones and other mobile devices.

A few things to note:

  • Blackboard and CougarWeb are still located at the very top of the site above the main navigation bar. The new website does not affect either Blackboard or CougarWeb.
  • The search bar pops open when you click the “search” button in the upper right-hand corner of the website. The search function will be disrupted for a few days after launch.
  • The main navigation menus open with a click (not a hover).
  • If you’re looking for the faculty and staff page, click the “Resources For” tab in the upper right-hand corner of the main navigation bar. In the drop-down menu, select employees. This link will take you to the faculty and staff landing page.

The Marketing and Communications team is currently building a new section of the website dedicated entirely to College employees — stay tuned for updates on that project.

Student groups update

Over the course of the fall semester, Columbus State students participated in 22 active clubs, organizations and affiliations. This includes five student groups that were newly formed this semester. These student groups hosted or attended 178 events or meetings since the beginning of fall semester and logged over 1,500 hours of involvement.

As we finish out the semester, we have gained a few more clubs and organizations that are in need of support. Students are looking to start:

1) A performance club where the mission is to educate, connect with the community and help others process current events through performance and expression

2) A social club offering food and fun, where students will connect with one another while exploring the campus and greater Columbus community on picnic-style field trips

Both of these potential clubs are in need of advisors, as well as a third club, the Muslim Student Association.

Please contact seal@cscc.edu if you would be interested in advising a student group. Student Engagement and Leadership will connect you with the student(s) who lead the groups and you can work as a team to start being active.

IT Support Center closed 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday

The IT Support Center will have a department meeting on Wednesday, December 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The department will be closed during this time.

Peer Advocate hours for winter break

While some of us may be counting down the days to break in anticipation of enjoying good food and spending time with friends and family, some students may be dreading the short loss of structure, support, and stability that college provides. If you sense that any of your students are dealing with non-academic barriers to their success such as food or housing insecurity, please send them to Aquinas Hall room 116 AC (inside Center for Advising, Support and Exploration) to meet with a Peer Advocate!

Five holiday cybersecurity safety tips

Criminals and fraudsters count on the hectic pace of the holidays to compromise computer systems, and steal money and personal information.

Here are some tips to help protect yourself:

Only shop on websites and mobile apps that you already use and trust. Don’t be tempted by a fantastic deal that seems a little too good to be true.

Don’t use promotional links in emails. Avoid clicking on links to prevent possible download of malware to your computer or a redirect to another site in order to collect login or payment information.

Watch out for fake delivery notification emails and/or text messages. Use only the tracking link on your website order page.

Be cautious of holiday-themed mobile apps. Be selective with downloads. Think twice before downloading from an unknown publisher.

Monitor your bank card activities. Early detection can prevent lost funds and restabilize your financial life.
