Davis today

MLK Day celebration scheduled for Jan. 31

Columbus State’s annual program celebrating the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held Tuesday, January 31, at 10:00 a.m. in the Columbus State Conference Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

The featured speaker will be Angela Davis, legendary activist, organizer, teacher, writer and scholar. Davis is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Feminist Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz.  She is internationally known for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad, and a living witness to the historical struggles of the contemporary era.

The January 31 date wraps up a month that celebrates Dr. King’s birthday on the 16th, and kicks off Black History Month celebrated in February, and Women’s History Month celebrated in March.

Place this important event on your calendars, and remind students in classes which could benefit from the historical perspective in American history, political science, Black history, women’s studies, etc.



New live stream site now available

The Instructional Technology Innovations Department has moved to a new and improved live streaming service, which is now available at The first event to be live streamed on the site was First Wednesday, on January 4.

The new service provides a more modern look as well as HD-quality streaming. Please note the new, shorter web address, which should be used to promote all future live streaming events. Those going to the old site will be automatically redirected to the new address.

Staff donate to student snack boxes

The Office of Student Advocacy reports that the staff of Student Central and the Center for Advising, Support, and Exploration (CASE) donated more than 700 food items to their Peer Advocates to use in “Grab & Go Food Boxes” for spring semester.  

The Grab & Go Food Box is available to food-insecure students who may need a snack to help them stay focused while on campus. The box is entirely stocked by the donations, which are welcomed by the Peer Advocates at any time in their office in Aquinas Hall 116. And if you know a student in need of a Grab & Go snack, let them know about this program!





Reminder: CCSSE 2017 coming in March

Columbus State will participate in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) during Spring Semester. Faculty will be contacted with more details as soon as the specific course sections to be surveyed are listed. If your course is selected, you will need to set aside 50 minutes during one of your class sessions between the end of March and middle of April to have the survey administered to students. Employees will also have the opportunity to volunteer to proctor the survey. Reminder:Mileage reimbursement rate decreases January 1

Columbus State's travel procedure 9-06(A) ties mileage reimbursement rates to the IRS guidelines. The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that business mileage rates will be decreased from .54 cents per mile to .535 cents per mile effective January 1, 2017.

Travel forms are available on the Intranet and will be updated to reflect the new rates.  Reimbursement forms that are in-transit will have the mileage rate adjusted by the Travel Office for travel that occurs on or after January 1, 2017.  Questions regarding the new rates should be addressed to Tracy Thornton in the Travel Office at ext. 2443.



One more open lab for myPLAN

The Employee Self-Review tasks in Cornerstone were released before the winter break to all participating employees. There’s still time to attend an open lab for tips on navigating the review process and conducting self-ratings. The self-review completion deadline is in late January. The last open lab will be held:

Reminders: No Junk January starts now!

The Columbus State Wellness Initiative wants to kick off 2017 with a “January Junk Challenge.” Challenge yourself to avoid junk food for 21 days! You can read more about what qualifies as junk food online here.  The challenge starts tomorrow, Tuesday, January 10, and runs through Tuesday, January 31. Record your experience to see how you do!


Paws for Healthy Change group meets on Tuesdays

The “Paws for a Healthy Change” wellness group will meet on Tuesdays at noon, starting tomorrow, January 10. The group’s purpose is to support employees in their personal wellbeing goals as part of a healthy lifestyle, including weight loss, physical activity, tobacco cessation and other lifestyle behaviors. The group is open to all employees, and will focus on diet, exercise, stress, barriers to a healthy lifestyle, and provide resources to support employees in their individual lifestyle goals. There will be weekly check-in meetings and optional weigh-ins.
