Picture-perfect evening provided ingredients for record-setting Taste the Future

Columbus State’s 30th annual Taste the Future Culinary Showcase set a new record by raising more than $250,000. That money will fund student success efforts at the College. The total is $10,000 more than the initial goal and was made possible by numerous sponsors and the more than 1,300 people who attended.

Many of the participating establishments featured graduates of the Culinary Apprenticeship program, including Barcelona, The Refectory, The Blackwell Inn, and Lindey’s. 

The event also honored three graduates of the college’s highly regarded culinary arts program. Adrienne Novak (Class of 1995) is the Proprietor and Chef at Eban’s Bakehouse. Titus Arensberg (Class of 2008) is the Lead Carver and Master Food Artist at Rock On Ice and a cook at Elements Local Bistro. Avishar Barua (Class of 2013) is the Executive Chef at Middle West Service Bar.

30 years of history: Staff member has worked at every Taste the Future

Frank Sugar, Special Services Coordinator, has seen the changes and the growth of Taste the Future. He’s worked at every one of them since its conception in 1989. Sugar has always worked for the Police Department at the event. He first served as a monitor and then later as a logistics person coordinating with the Columbus Division of Police, medics and others who provide services. This year he assisted in the VIP section.

“This is my favorite event every year,” says Sugar. “It’s been enjoyable from the start. It gives me a chance to be able to meet with the public and civic leaders who attend.”

Sugar recalls the first few years being much smaller in scale. Back then it attracted roughly 500 people and a couple of dozen food booths. Today, more than 1,000 people attend and more than 50 restaurants and food service companies provide the culinary cuisine.


Testing Center closed today and tomorrow

The Aquinas Testing Center on the Columbus Campus will be closed today and tomorrow, August 16 and 17, so that new staff workstations can be installed. Please direct any students who need to complete their placement tests to the Community & Professional Testing Center on the second floor of WD. Regular testing operations will resume Saturday.


Food Service Operations closed Tuesday for training

AVI has scheduled mandatory sanitation training for all AVI staff on Tuesday, August 21. As a result, it will require both Subway and Sips to be closed Tuesday so that all staff can attend.

For the remaining days during the break:
Subway: 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday; 7:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. Friday
Sips: 7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday; 7:30 a.m.– 12:00 p.m. Friday

Police event

On Thursday, August 2, the Columbus State Police Department hosted the campus safety assessment portion of the School Resource Officer Training Program. This program was based for the week at the Columbus Police Academy and trained 120 school resource officers from around the state. This represents the largest group of Ohio Police Officers to participate in the School Resource Officer training certification. Columbus State is the first College campus in Ohio to host this event. 

Paralegal Studies Program earns re-approval

The House of Delegates of the American Bar Association, acting on the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Paralegals, granted re-approval to the Paralegal Studies Program at Columbus State Community College through 2023.

The Columbus State Paralegal program is the home of the Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies, Post-Bachelor Certificate program, and the 3 +1 Paralegal Studies Degree Program Partnership with Kent State University. The Department of Justice, Safety, and Legal Studies would like to thank all faculty, staff, advisory committee members and students who participated in the process.




 Employee Appreciation this week in Columbus and Delaware

employee appreciation day The annual Employee Appreciation Days hosted by Staff Advisory Council (SAC) are being held this week. The Columbus Campus celebrated Wednesday (see above) outside Nestor Hall. It will be held today from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on the Delaware Campus patio. Above, staff members enjoyed lunch and activities Wednesday on the Columbus Campus.


College Success Express – a success!

The College Success Express team wants to thank the faculty members who taught and tutored this summer and the many Columbus State employees who warmly shared information about campus services and did behind-the-scenes work. All of the effort smoothed students’ transitions to the College.

Here are some of the comments directly from College Express students:

Summer orientation turnout

The Center for Advising, Support, and Exploration would like to thank everyone who supported the successful summer orientation series. Director Molly Ward says the college served a total of 2,020 students: 1,838 at the Columbus Campus and 191 at the Delaware Campus. Ward adds, “It truly takes the entire college to make Orientation successful. Please know your support is greatly appreciated and valued.”
