Nursing students participate in active learning seminar to ensure career readiness

photo of interview sessions
On Wednesday, January 23, 110 Columbus State nursing students participated in a career readiness event. The event was offered to nursing students in their final semester and consisted of a Career Fair and a Career Readiness Seminar to help prepare students for entry into the nursing profession.

During the Career Fair portion of the event, community healthcare partners provided students the opportunity to discover, explore, and learn about various career options.  Students engaged prospective employers while learning about area healthcare organizations.

During the Career Readiness Seminar, students rotated through a variety of learning stations. Columbus State’s Career Services was on-hand to review student resumes and provide immediate feedback on how each student could improve his or her resume. Career Services also provided a variety of tools and resources for students to reference regarding cover letters, resume writing, and interviewing. Several hiring managers from OhioHealth and recruiters from OSU Wexner Medical Center performed mock interviews with each student and provided suggestions on how they might improve their interview process.

Many students said they were grateful for the learning opportunity and that they felt much more prepared and confident to enter the profession of nursing upon graduation.

Mental Health First Aid Training

Similar to first aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches individuals how to help those experiencing mental health challenges or crises. Mental health challenges – such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use – are common in the United States. In fact, more than one in five American adults will have a mental health problem in any given year. Identified on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, the training helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses. Mental Health First Aid is being offered free of charge at Columbus State thanks to a grant from the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County.

MHFA will be offered on Wednesday, March 13 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on the Columbus Campus.  Individuals must commit to attending the entire eight-hour training. If you are not able to attend the entire training, please do not register; allowing someone else the opportunity to attend.

Click here to register. For questions about the training please contact Dr. Ameena Kemavor.
