Mitchell Hall dedicated
Lt. Governor, mayor, among more than 400
attending dedication ceremony

After years of planning and just 14 months following the ceremonial groundbreaking, Mitchell Hall was dedicated with a celebration Monday morning. Lt. Governor Jon Husted was among the speakers at the formal dedication held inside the building’s second-floor Event Center. The other speakers were Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, City Council President Shannon Hardin, David Miller, president and COO of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants (CMR), and Cameron Mitchell, founder and CEO of CMR. President Harrison, who provided welcome remarks, said, “We wanted to make a signature facility out of a signature program.”

The $34.5 million hall will showcase Columbus State’s new home of the School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. The three-story, 80,000 square-foot structure is a world away from the basement of Eibling Hall where the program has been headquartered for years.

Mitchell Hall is named after restaurateur Cameron Mitchell who took the early lead by providing $2.5 million toward a $10 million philanthropic goal of private funding for the project.

Jim Taylor, chairperson of Sport & Exercise Studies and Hospitality Programs said, “It will allow more students the opportunity to obtain a great education with a 16:1 ratio in all laboratory classes, while at the same time allowing many of them to graduate debt free.”

“Mitchell Hall is in a class of its own,” said Josh Wickham, director of operations for Mitchell Hall. “This facility will allow Columbus State to be a benchmark institution for culinary, dietetics, and hospitality education.”

The ground floor of Mitchell Hall includes Degrees, a restaurant and bar, and Blend, a retail cafe and bakery. Both will be operated by students when they open to the public this fall.

Taste the Future exceeds fundraising goals

Tuesday’s annual Taste the Future culinary showcase followed Monday’s dedication of Mitchell Hall. The new building was open for self-guided tours for any of the more than 1,500 people attending Taste 2019. The fundraising goal of $250,000 was exceeded by $25,000. Proceeds benefit scholarships and other student success initiatives.

There were more than 50 food stations. Many of the participating establishments at the event featured graduates of the Columbus State Culinary Apprenticeship program, including Barcelona, Service Bar, Granville Inn, and Hubbard Grille. Julie Barry, Jesse Jones, and Annie Clausen coordinated the annual event. A special thanks to the volunteers and the Facilities team helping before, during, and after to make the fundraising event possible.

Welcome Team sign-ups continue

With autumn semester beginning on Monday, August 26, volunteers are needed to greet and guide students as they come to campus. Volunteers will be asked to fill shifts at three locations on these dates: Saturday, August 24, Monday, August 26, and Tuesday, August 27. Each volunteer receives a free Welcome Team t-shirt. If you are interested, sign up here. You can contact Molly Ward if you have questions. We look forward to having you support our students as they start the new semester. (Volunteers are needed on that Saturday as part of a new initiative which encourages students to visit campus ahead of the semester to locate parking, classrooms, buildings, and more.)

Achievement Analytics training for employees

Achievement Analytics – Basics
Friday, August, 16 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in WD 209
Participants will receive an overview of the Achievement Analytics website and learn how Achievement Analytics can help you make decisions with the use of consistent, transparent data. The site includes items such as information on enrollment, course sections, census day data elements, multiple student success metrics, and other academic program-level data elements. Reports, such as a College Scorecard, and other benchmarking information are also available directly from Achievement Analytics. Register on Cornerstone by going to the Events Calendar tab under Learning.

Achievement Analytics – Reports
Friday, August 16 from 11:00 a.m.-noon in WD 209
Participants will receive an overview of the Reports section of the Achievement Analytics website, which mostly contains student-level data. A basic overview of FERPA will be provided. Achievement Analytics – Basics is a prerequisite to this course. Register on Cornerstone by going to the Events Calendar tab under Learning.


Volunteer for Taste of Campus

Taste of Campus: A Passport to Student Success is Columbus State’s collective effort to showcase changes and updates in various departments for all faculty and staff. It will be held in an open-house format on Friday, August 23 from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on the Columbus Campus following the morning Convocation. Volunteers are needed for this annual event. Your assistance will help the day run smoothly, and it counts toward service or professional development goals. If you’re interested in volunteering at one of the locations, fill out this form. (Note: Specific areas are still being determined and will be announced soon.)


Hands-on law enforcement event August 24

The Columbus State Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office are hosting a day-long conference in the Center for Workforce Development on Saturday, August 24. The morning session will be for law enforcement agencies.

That afternoon, a hands-on tie-in event will be open to the entire community. The Police Department will be open for residents to stop in and ask questions. A MILO training simulator – an interactive tactical and firearms training system – will be available for demonstrations. Multiple police vehicles from around Franklin County will also be opened up and on display for a “Touch-A-Truck” for children (and adults). Officer Megan Hale has helped coordinate the event for the College. Touch-A-Truck will take place from 2:30-5:00 p.m. in parking lot 2-E at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Grove Street. Cougar Welcome is coming! Our annual cookout and talent show will be occurring during our first four weeks of the semester. The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership would like to invite you to participate as a “Celebrity Chef” for the cookouts or a "Judge" for the “CS Has Talent!” show.

The cookouts will be held on Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29. Celebrity Chefs are needed from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. for meal prep and distribution of hotdogs and food items. The Student Engagement and Leadership office will provide free food and beverages along with activities on these days as a way to kick off autumn semester for students.

CS HasTalent will be held on Tuesday, September 10 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Columbus Campus Courtyard! Judges are needed for one-hour shifts during that time. You can choose what time(s) you are available.

Cougar Fairs 

Cougar Fair - Columbus Campus
The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership would like to invite all Columbus State departments, student groups, and partnered colleges to participate in the 2019 Fall Cougar Fairs. These events are free and open to the Columbus State community. This will be an excellent opportunity to showcase the involvement and resources that your organization, department, and colleges offer to Columbus State students.

If you’re interested in hosting a table during one or both days of the fair, please complete the registration form here by Tuesday, September 3. The fairs will occur on two dates:

Equity Advocate training

With the autumn semester cohort of Equity Advocate training now full, an additional cohort was just added. In order to support fair, legal, and equitable hiring and promotional processes at Columbus State, you are invited to participate in the Equity Advocate Certification Training Program. This program amplifies the College commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in hiring and promotion.

Presenters needed for CLCO

The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL) needs 2019 Workshop Proposals for the 10th annual Collegiate Leadership Conference of Ohio (CLCO). This day-an-a-half conference will be held Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9 in the Columbus State Conference Center.

Since 2009, Columbus State's Student Ambassador Leadership Program has worked to organize an engaging and informative conference for college students and advisors across Ohio. Over the last 10 years, more than 1,000 attendees have had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, hear from expert speakers, engage in hands-on community service experiences, and network with other students and professionals. As we celebrate the 10th annual conference, we reflect on the last 10 years of the people we met, the speakers we have heard, and the experiences we have made!

This year's theme is 10 Years Later: The Evolution of Leadership, with the purpose for attendees to develop a culture of collaboration and developmental leadership. Key areas of focus include leadership, collaboration, communication, holistic wellness, self-efficacy, diversity, and equity.

DEIS faculty Blackboard training workshops

Effective online teaching course
This course is required for Columbus State faculty teaching at web courses at a distance for the first time. It can also be used by faculty members who wish to refresh their distance-learning teaching skills. This fully online course prepares participants to teach in the web format, using department-approved shells (courses that have been designed by experienced faculty and undergone quality peer review). The course takes approximately 15 hours to complete over the three weeks it is offered. The course is facilitated but is self-paced, and there are deadlines to keep participants on task.
