springtime photoWelcome to Spring Quarter!Spring Quarter enrollment is up over 9% with 23,847 students registered as of Friday to attend classes starting today. This is record enrollment for Spring Quarter – last spring enrollment stood at 21,524.  Columbus State has now experienced record enrollment increases for three straight quarters.

Columbus State also dropped fewer students for non-payment of fees for Spring 2009 (3,447), than Winter 2009 (4,312), and Autumn 2008 (4,976).

Now that spring is here, exciting progress is also being made in Delaware County at the new campus, on Academic Center E, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2010. In these views taken March 24, one can see an interior view looking down from the second floor. The exterior view shows the building wrapped in insulation, with an interesting array of windows on the north wall. When completed, Academic Center E will have 88,000 square feet on two floors plus a basement. Twenty-two classrooms, four computer labs, two science labs, two seminar rooms and a distance learning classroom will complete the space. Most of the faculty, staff and administrator offices for the campus will be housed in an existing building, which is being renovated on the site.

Campus wireless access updatedgraphic of computer and rainbowA new “Cisco Clean Access” agent will be available for download and installation when you log into the Columbus State wireless network this week. This is a normal application version update.

The update will be offered as an optional download on the wireless network for the next seven days but will become mandatory on April 6. It is a simple "follow-the-prompts" installation that averages three minutes to complete.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day planned for April 23Program limited to first 25 to apply
logoTake Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is a national program designed to encourage girls and boys across the country to dream without gender limitations and to think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives. Columbus State will sponsor a program on Thursday, April 23, for 25 children in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The Columbus State program is designed to:

  1. Provide a first-hand experience to learn what their Columbus State sponsor (Mom, Dad, Uncle, Aunt, etc.) does at work.

  2. Explore some of the careers that Columbus State prepares its students to enter.

  3. Learn that college can be fun and interesting.

Mother and daughterThe children will be welcomed at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and registration. Structured activities will follow until noon, when lunch will be served to the children and sponsors. After lunch, the participants will job shadow with their sponsor.

The program is limited to the first 25 participants in 6th-8th grade with a Columbus State sponsor. The sponsor must be on campus and available by phone, attend lunch with the participant, and provide job shadowing for the participant from 1-5 p.m. 

Compete and submit the registration form and return it to: Susan Thompson, HR, RH-115, no later than April 8. Participants are selected on the first-come, first-served basis. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the program, including group leaders to help take kids on a scavenger hunt around campus. To volunteer, contact Lori McKenzie at ext. 5212.

Shared Governance Elections to be held May 19, 20Columbus State is currently soliciting nominations of individuals to run for election to serve on the councils and committees in Shared Governance. If elected, individuals will serve on one council, as well as on one of the three standing committees within that council.

The Instructional Council is responsible for academic items and will include three committees: curriculum, student support, and assessment.

The Instructional Support Council is responsible for items that relate to resources that support instruction and will include three committees: fiscal resources and facilities, technology, and human capacity development. 

Employees may nominate themselves, a staff member, a faculty member, or an administrator in any category. There is no limit to the number of individuals you may nominate, but you must use a separate form for each nomination. All individuals who are nominated have the option of accepting or declining the nomination. To be placed on the ballot, you must complete the acceptance/decline form, which will be distributed upon receipt of your nomination.

During the election, you can vote only in the classification in which you work. For example, faculty vote for faculty representatives only, and staff may vote only for staff.

Two AQIP Action Projects “retired”

, Knowledge, Resources and Planning, reports to the AQIP Steering Committee on the Action Project “Identifying Available Data Sources.”

Two Action Project teams shared their results with the AQIP Steering Committee on March 17. The Identifying Available Data Sources at CSCC team proposed a new process to gather, compile, and continually update a list of data sources used by college personnel. The Bridging Communication Gaps within CSCC Decision-Making Process team proposed changes to improve the communication process for governance, changes that included a redesign of the Web site, a year-end reporting process, and a standardized feedback process for all submissions. Both reports are available in their entirety on the AQIP Web site.

Retired projects are removed from the Action Project Directory on the Web site. New projects will be chosen in the future to replace these two retired projects. Project recommendations will be implemented by process owners and will be monitored by the Steering Committee.

Health Coaching registration now available for Wellness IncentiveWellness logoHealth Coaching is the third step toward completing Columbus State’s Wellness Incentive Program and receiving (up to) a $300 incentiveRegistration for this coaching is now available at your Columbus State WebMD page.

In the program, employees who complete (in this order):  1) a Biometric Screening, 2) an online Personal Health Assessment and 3) one session of Health Coaching, are qualified to receive a $150 incentive from Columbus State in August 2009. 

Health coaching consists of a half-hour session in person or by phone with an Ohio State Managed Health Care Systems nurse, who will go over the results of your biometric screening and Personal Health Assessment with you and answer questions. To receive your first $150 incentive, you must complete one health coaching session, but you may receive additional coaching sessions if you request them.

By taking part in various wellness activities offered from January 2009 through June 2009, employees can accumulate additional wellness points to earn an additional $150. These wellness activities might include attending Lunch and Learn workshops, getting a flu shot, participating in the Wellness Challenge, having preventive exams, and many additional opportunities.

Through the Ohio State Managed Health Care Systems, Columbus State has a portal to WebMD, a medical and healthy living Web site that offers a wealth of information concerning your health.  Also included on Columbus State’s WebMD site is a location for you to sign up for a Biometric Screening, your Personal Health Assessment, and Health Coaching sessions. By going to the CSCC Wellness Link you can access the WebMD site, where you will be prompted to register with a login and password. After you register, you will be able to sign up for your first step: the biometric screening. Biometric screening is a finger-prick blood test and other measurements that take about 20 minutes to complete and will be performed on campus.
