Healthcare Open Enrollment memo to all fulltime employeesOver the past several months Human Resources has been working with USI, the College’s medical insurance broker, in regards to Columbus State’s health benefit renewals effective July 1, 2009. Below is a summary:

Health Insurance
Columbus State will keep its health coverage with United Healthcare and will offer the current Core and HSA plans. The basic plan design components will remain the same.  Columbus State will move to United Healthcare’s updated certificate of coverage language. An overview of the language changes will be provided at the Open Enrollment sessions on May 5 and 6.  The increase is significantly below medical trend.  The overall increase to the college this year is 5.5%. How this increase and the changes in the certificate of coverage language will affect you personally will be explained in the Open Enrollment meetings.

If you are enrolled in the HSA plan the college will continue to contribute $1,000 for Single and $2,000 for Family into the HSA bank accounts.
Dental Insurance
Columbus State will renew the current plan with Delta Dental. The premiums are increasing slightly by 4%.

Vision Insurance
Effective July 1, 2008, Columbus State offered a new vision insurance program with Vision Service Plan (VSP).  We have had very positive feedback regarding this plan. Columbus State will continue to pay 50% of the premiums. Employee contributions will not change in FY2009. Those who want to enroll in this benefit can sign up during the Open Enrollment period.

Supplemental Life Insurance
Columbus State has moved its Life Insurance to United Healthcare. Due to the change in providers, we are offering an Open Enrollment period for supplemental life insurance. This is a one-time guaranteed-issue opportunity.  It is for the life insurance you can purchase over and above the amount the college provides. You will have the opportunity to buy 1X or 2X your salary up to a maximum of $340,000. If you do not currently have supplemental coverage, you can purchase 1X your salary on a guaranteed-issue basis, which means no medical questions are required as long as you are actively working. You can apply for 2X your salary by filling out an evidence of insurability form for the additional amount. You will be approved or declined for the additional amount based on your health status. No forms are required unless you want to enroll or make changes.

Open Enrollment Sessions available to all full-time employees will be held:
May 5:  9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in WD-435
May 6:  8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in WD-435

If you would like to enroll in the health, dental or vision plans, add or drop dependents, or cancel your coverage—now is the time to do so. Please pick up an Enrollment Form in Human Resources.  If you do not need to make any changes or adjustments, your plans will automatically renew and no paperwork is required.  Please let the Human Resources Department know if you have any questions.

Take your Tom Tom with you!gps on dashboardSome 5.8 million personal navigation devices, or GPS devices, were sold in the U.S. in 2007, and their theft is on the rise. Like iPods and laptop computers before them, the pricey gadgets have become the newest high-tech target. Yet even as sales have slowed in recent months as consumers cut back on discretionary spending, theft of the devices has continued to soar. According to the FBI, as of late April, 31,324 portable navigation devices had been reported stolen in the U.S.—a 12 percent increase since late February. The crime is particularly rampant in big cities. College campuses are no exception.

Columbus State Chief of Police Sean Asbury says students and employees who leave their GPS devices attached to the dash or windshield when they are in class can become victims of smash and grab thefts, where car windows are broken to steal the devices.  Asbury recommends that you take your GPS unit with you when you exit your vehicle, and you should even remove the windshield or dashboard mounts if possible, because thieves often look for that simple evidence that the GPS unit is hidden in the glove box, and smash your car window looking for it.
