Math Chair named to Business First “Forty Under 40” list

Jon Baker
Jonathan Baker

Jonathan Baker, chairman of the Mathematics Department since 2006, has been named by Business First newspaper to the annual “Forty Under 40” list, awarded to individuals who demonstrate leadership in their profession and contribute to the community—and are under 40 years old. Nearly 500 individuals were nominated this year, according to the paper.

"Jonathan is always searching for better ways to teach so that more students can learn and subsequently qualify for careers in the mathematical sciences."
-Dr. Patricia Brosnan

Baker, 34, has been with Columbus State since 1996, when he started as a math instructor, teaching statistics, algebra and calculus. As an assistant professor, Baker created the department’s first hybrid math course and managed the $30,000 budget for math tutoring. As chair, he supervises 26 full-time faculty and 152 adjuncts. He implemented a Peer Review Process and created an advisory committee for adjunct faculty, as well as conducted numerous mini-conferences and break-out sessions for the department.

Baker represents Columbus State on the Ohio STEM Ability Alliance steering committee, which is a statewide initiative to recruit, retain and graduate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students with disabilities.

He serves as the mathematics liaison for the Early College program with the Columbus Africentric High School, and completed a year of leadership development training with the Ohio Statewide Leadership Academy.

Baker’s doctoral advisor at Ohio State, Dr. Patricia Brosnan, said “Jonathan is always searching for better ways to teach so that more students can learn and subsequently qualify for careers in the mathematical sciences. He does not sit by to watch the demise of the educational system. Rather, he works to make it better and has been quite successful at it.”

Dr. Jack Cooley, Dean of Arts and Sciences, said “It is an axiom of higher education that a person who can lead mathematicians has the talent to lead wisely and well. Jonathan represents the best of his generation.”

Baker will receive his award at a banquet tonight and the “Forty Under 40” award winners will be published in a special supplement to Business First on Friday, May 22.
