Cost Center Manager training offered March 15
The Business Services Department will offer a seminar for employees called “Working with Business Services: An Introduction to Business Services-Cost Center Manager Training,” on Monday, March 15 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in WD Room 409. The seminar is for cost-center managers, their assistants, and those who work closely with cost centers. It is helpful for new cost center managers as well as those who would like a refresher course.

The training will cover financial and administrative processes such as budgets, purchasing, reimbursements and travel, working with office services, general ledger accounts, project accounting, and areas that impact students.

	Call for Presentations: Spring In-Service Day All college employees are invited to submit presentation proposals for the 2010 Spring In-Service Day, Friday, April 23. This In-Service will focus on practices, programs, and policies that reflect the college’s ongoing commitment to student retention. The In-Service Group is seeking proposals that: Showcase successful programs, strategies, and best practices in student retention. Highlight resources, partnerships, and student support services toward enhancing retention. Promote discussions and exchanges between colleagues who are working on student success/retention issues. To submit a presentation proposal, please complete the proposal form and return it by email to igroup@cscc.edu. All submissions will be reviewed by the In-Service Group, and priority will be given to presentations that are directly relevant to the theme. The deadline for all proposal submissions is noon on Friday, April 2.

Chorus to perform tonight, Concert Band tomorrow
Chorus Columbus State will perform their Winter Chorus Concert tonight at 8 p.m. in Nestor Hall Auditorium, directed by Gordon Franklin. The chorus will perform Vivaldi's “Gloria” and Benjamin Britten's “Rejoice in the Lamb” with organ and piano accompaniment. The concert features student soloists and the ensemble. The concert is free and open to the public.

Columbus State Concert Band will present its free Winter Term concert on Tuesday, March 9, at 8 p.m. in Nestor Hall Auditorium.

The program, under the direction of Thomas Lloyd, will feature Columbus State faculty member Rose Marie Zuber performing the finale of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in a new arrangement made especially for the college.

The program will include selections from Orff's "Carmina Burana," "Simple Song" by Andrew Boysen, excerpts from the musical "Cats," and the 1899 trombone novelty march "Mr. Thomas-Cat." Also performing on the concert will be the Woodwind Ensemble and the Low Brass Ensemble.

 

	Grant opportunity for faculty from OATYC The Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges (OATYC) has announced a call for proposals, due April 1, for the 2010 Teaching Grant. The award is available to any two-year college professor, full- or part-time, who is member of the OATYC or whose Institution is a member of the Ohio Association for Two Year Colleges. The OATYC Teaching Grant will be given to the faculty member who submits a proposal that best enhances teaching and learning in his or her classroom. Here are the key dates and application form. The 2009 winner of the OATYC Teaching Grant was Professor Adrienne Cassel from Sinclair Community College. Professor Cassel's project is entitled, "Writing in the Weathered World: Using Place-Based Education to Improve Student Learning, Increase Environmental Awareness, and Foster Community Involvement." Professor Cassel will present the outcomes from her project during an educational session at the 2010 OATYC Conference at Central Ohio Technical College, Newark. ITDL session: “Retaining Online Students: A Student Affairs and Faculty Perspective”
Three faculty members from Rio Salado Community College, Ariz., a large online college, will present a case study with best practices for promoting retention in an online learning environment in this session on Wednesday, March 10, from 3-4:30 p.m.

The faculty perspective session will highlight the innovative use of data to identify students who may need additional support. The use of predictive modeling analytics and how it can convert this data into action by identifying learners with the highest risk of attrition and the circumstances affecting their success will be discussed. Presenters will show how you can use this data to design a corresponding communication campaign and develop other relevant instructor strategies for retaining and reaching online students.

The second part of the presentation will discuss the student affairs perspective and will highlight the use of an innovative virtual student union called the “RioLounge.” Participants will also see how Rio Salado College uses online orientation to improve student retention and success. Finally, information will be provided on how CRM technology can be leveraged to encourage persistence. Register

	Writing Center offers MLA documentation workshop The Writing Center will hold an MLA Documentation Workshop on Wednesday, March 10, from 2-3 p.m. in Nestor Hall Room 229, where students can get last-minute help with MLA in-text citations and Works Cited pages for their end-of-term papers. Reminder: Fee Waivers due March 19
The deadline for Employee/Dependent Fee Waivers for Spring Quarter 2010 is Friday, March 19. A Request for Fee Waiver form must be turned into Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. to guarantee that fee waivers will be processed before late fees are assessed.

Employees may also first pay fees and be reimbursed within 30 days from the start of the quarter by completing the Request for Fee Waiver form and submitting an official payment receipt into Human Resources by April 28. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Thompson at ext. 2406.
