Connie Grossman, chair Allied Health Professions, reports that the Dental Hygiene class of 2010, 11 students, all passed the national board examination. This was the 6th year in a row with a 100 percent pass rate for our students!

Plan your day on Friday, April 23, by taking a look at the Spring In-Service Day program, now online here. The day begins with breakfast at 8 a.m. and ends with department meetings at 3 p.m. The day includes a Wellness Fair, a general session and 29 breakout sessions from which to choose. This spring’s theme is Student Retention.

The opening session will be given by Dr. Watson Scott Swail, president and CEO of the Educational Policy Institute, a nonprofit, non-governmental organization dedicated to policy-based research on educational opportunity for all students.

With offices in Virginia Beach, Va., Toronto, Ontario, and Melbourne, Australia, EPI’s mission is to impact the development and implementation of public policy and educational practice through high-level research and analysis.

Widely respected in the area of college opportunity research, Dr. Swail has published extensively in national journals and publications. He serves on a number of national advisory committees and has recently conducted projects for the Canada Millennium Scholarship Program related to postsecondary access in Canada. Prior to establishing EPI, Dr. Swail served as the Founding Director of The Pell Institute and Vice President of the Council for Opportunity in Education in Washington, D.C. In addition to his research and writing, Dr. Swail teaches educational policy and research at George Washington University, where he received his doctorate in educational policy.

2009 AQIP Systems Portfolio Appraisers' Review now complete
coverThe AQIP Systems Appraisal team has concluded that Columbus State Community College has presented evidence that it complies with each of the Five Criteria for Accreditation and each of their Core Components.

The Columbus State Systems Portfolio is a 100-page public document describing fundamental institutional systems of the college. The content was developed through interviews and data submission from teams in each functional area of the college.

The portfolio provides examples illustrating how the college carries out its work. It describes the overall context and processes of continuous improvement. Columbus State decided to use the appraisal process to obtain feedback on all areas. Examples in the portfolio provide the evidence used to determine that the institution continues to meet the Higher Learning Commission's Five Criteria for Accreditation.

For the purpose of continuous process improvement, each college’s portfolio is appraised by a team. Appraisal team members represent private industry, non-profit work and education. The purpose of the appraisal is to provide feedback that Columbus State can use in planning how to strengthen its current systems. This feedback is a great resource for the college to use in moving forward.

The appraisal (with user's guide) is intended to provide meaningful discussion among process owners and their stakeholders. Even if a specific area is not included in the examples used in the document, the appraisal can be used to show what is expected in process improvement. Some recommendations point out steps that can be used for improvement. Others suggest opportunities to combine processes for collaboration across divisions and departments. The information will also provide direction for selecting future work at Columbus State.

book coverFinal Val’s Book Club to examine educational stereotypes
President Val Moeller will retire at the end of June, and the final session of Val’s Book Club is ready to assemble to read and discuss “Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us,” by Claude Steele.

In this book, renowned social psychologist Steele addresses one of the most perplexing social issues of our time: the trend of minority underperformance in higher education.

“This book is both urgent and important in understanding the tyranny of the stereotype and liberating ourselves from its derogatory, one-dimensional vision,” said Homi Bhabha, of Harvard University.

The club will meet to discuss the book on Thursday, June 3, at noon in the Franklin Hall Board Room.

Shared Governance elections coming May 18 and 19
As part of the Shared Governance process, Columbus State annually solicits nominations of individuals to serve on the councils and committees. The term for these elected positions is three years. All elected representatives may serve no more than two consecutive terms, or six years, on Shared Governance.

Elected or appointed representatives have an obligation to participate in at least 75 percent of the meetings. All individuals who are nominated have the option of accepting or declining the nomination. To be placed on the ballot, you must complete the acceptance/decline form, which will be distributed upon receipt of your nomination.

You may nominate yourself, a staff member, a faculty member, or an administrator in any category. There is no limit on the number of individuals that you may nominate. During the election, you can only vote for nominees in your own classification (ie: staff vote for staff)

All adjunct faculty and part-time staff must have at least five years of service with the college to be nominated and placed on the ballot.
