Department of Education funds “Talent Search” program though 2012

logoThe Office of TRiO Programs, which offers Upward Bound, Student Support Services and Educational Talent Search, recently received notification from Senator Sherrod Brown’s office that the U.S. Department of Education will fund the Educational Talent Search program through August 2012 with a $230,000 grant.

The grant allows Columbus State to continue effectively partnering with Columbus City Schools, the community, and the families of low-income and potential first-generation college students, assisting a new generation of students to access college and find success. The grant is expected to continue for five years for a total of $1.15 million.

“This TRiO program focuses on getting middle school students from low-income families and under represented groups into the college pipeline,” said Dr. Jan Rogers, vice president for Student Affairs. Some of the services offered include academic, financial, career, or personal counseling; career exploration and aptitude assessment; tutoring; exposure to the college campus; financial aid information; assistance in preparing for college entrance exams; mentoring programs; special activities for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders; and workshops for the families of participants.
The grant was written by Renée Hampton and Stephanie Albrecht with the assistance of the Grants Office.

Columbus State will make this change effective July 15, 2011.

Travel forms are available on the Intranet and will be updated to reflect the new rates. Computer repair classes get new name

Deb Dyer
Deborah Dyer, right, demonstrates refurbished computers that were donated last year to The Fisher House.

This Summer Quarter, Assistant Professor Deborah Dyer’s PC Technician classes will work under a new name: Cougar Geeks! They were formerly called FreeGeeks of CSCC.

“We decided to change the name to better identify who we are and what we are about,” said Dyer. “Many people were confusing us with FreeGeeks of Columbus or the Geek Squad.”

The Cougar Geeks classes (ITST 143 and 266) combine traditional class with hands-on experience and community service. The students refurbish PC equipment and give them to nonprofit organizations as well as provide PCs for Columbus State students through raffles.

“The Cougar Geeks are working very hard this quarter to refurbish as many donated PCs as possible due to an anticipated influx of donated PCs from a new partner,” said Dyer. “They will be working with the local YMCA/YWCA and veteran associations to provide them with desktop PCs as well as offering a student raffle later in Summer Quarter,” she said.

IT is currently completing testing on an update to WebUI which will be available on Monday, July 18.
