Flexing his academic muscles
After Friday’s Winter Quarter Commencement, a graduate poses “Arnold” style in front of Veterans Memorial where the new bronze statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger was recently installed. More than 550 graduates earned their degrees March 16 and heard a commencement address by the CEO of State Auto Insurance, Robert Restrepo.

The Welcome Team Spring 2012 edition will be held Monday, March 26, and Tuesday, March 27, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can join to welcome new and returning students to the Columbus Campus.
Your service is vital, appreciated and has a direct impact on student success at Columbus State. This quarter the team will be offering assistance in Madison Hall, on the second floor level in the Student Assistance Center and Records and Registration lobby.

Employee Resource Groups (ERG) are designed to create and sustain an environment in which employees can achieve their potential and provide an intellectually rich and engaging forum. Twenty-first annual Symposium takes place at Bolton Field

Columbus State’s Aviation Maintenance Technology hosted the 21st annual Ohio Aviation Maintenance Symposium March 14 and 15 at Bolton Field. Over the two-day event, 457 aviation maintenance technicians and students attended recurrent training. For mechanics holding the Inspection Authorization designation by the FAA, the training is required for their annual renewal.
The 25 speakers at the Symposium included the FAA's Chief Scientist for Human Factors, Dr. Bill Johnson. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit 39 vendor displays, which were set up in the hangar of the Bolton Field facility.
Cliff Kelling, Professor Emeritus was honored by the FAA and awarded the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award for his dedication and service in the aviation community for fifty years. Prof. Kelling will be honored with a permanent plaque in the FAA Headquarters in Washington D.C. He joins fellow Columbus Technical Institute and Columbus State faculty and chairs Claire Kosbab and Cliff Marr with this honor.
Columbus State was also awarded the FAA Gold Award for the Aviation Maintenance Technician Awards Program. In January, Gene Sprang, associate professor, Jeff Gruber, assistant professor/program coordinator, and Mike Kent, adjunct instructor were also awarded the FAA's Bronze Award for the AMT Awards Program in continuing education.
TRiO students complete service project
As part of a TRiO Day celebration on Saturday March 10, students in Columbus State's TRiO Programs—Student Support Services, Upward Bound, and Educational Talent Search—completed their service project to assemble personal care packs for the Broad Street Food Pantry and Choices. Columbus State students donated products, as well as employees and several departments. With donations from area businesses Walgreens, Kroger, Sam's Club, Giant Eagle, and Target, the students were able to produce 80 complete packs that will be donated, along with hundreds of stand-alone products, to the two organizations.
Columbus State's three TRiO programs are federally funded college access and success programs that annually serve 729 middle school, high school, and current students who are from low-income families and/or are potential first-generation college graduates. TRiO programs provide support, tools, and guidance that enable each student to set and achieve ambitious academic goals. Thank you to all who donated to the students’ service project!
Fitness Center locker rooms locked
The locker rooms in the Columbus State Fitness Center are locked at all times. To gain access to the locker rooms, your Cougar ID will need to be activated. Employees can email their Cougar ID number to Julie Collins for access. The locker rooms will be available for use during the hours of operation of the Fitness Center, which are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
