New Public Safety Department position oversees parking

Vanessa Cummings

Vanessa Cummings has been hired to fill the newly created position of Parking and Transportation Supervisor, and she is quickly getting acquainted with the many intricate parking issues facing the college. The position is within the Department of Public Safety and Security.

Director John Nestor says, “Vanessa's primary responsibilities over the next six to 12 months will be to review the current parking practices and gather data to recommend a long-term parking operation plan aligned with the college mission and strategic objectives.”

Cummings held a similar job at Miami University in Oxford, where she grew up. She worked at the university for more than 17 years as the Assistant Director of Parking and Transportation Services. She’ll be putting that experience to work here at Columbus State.

At Miami, her responsibilities included overseeing the parking office, customer service, parking enforcement, garage operations, event parking, access control for the department, and tech support for the software programs. Cummings is a graduate of the University of Alabama and Payne Theological Seminary.

Columbus State accreditation teams made their way to the Windy City recently for the 117th  Higher Learning Commission Conference.

Higher education institutions from the nineteen-state North Central region report to the HLC for the latest on accreditation and federal compliance issues.

The Chicago contingent was led by Polly Owen and Greg Goodhart, who are leading the college's Reaffirmation of Accreditation project.  Also attending the conference were Adele Wright, Antoinette Perkins, Bradley Trimble, Bruce Massis, Connie Grossman, David Tom, Deborah Coleman, Libby Daugherty, Judith Dann, Kent Fisher, Laurie Johns, Lydia Gilmore, Patricia Opong and Tom Lyons.

Examiners from the Higher Learning Commission are scheduled for the Quality Check-Up Visit on April 17 - 19, 2013.  The visit will include five components: Systems Portfolio clarification and verification, the Systems Appraisal Follow-Up, an Accreditation Issues Follow-Up, a Federal Compliance Review, and a look at our Organizational Quality Commitment. These five components are being addressed by members of the Reaffirmation of Accreditation team in preparation for the HLC visit in exactly one year!

Traveling for Columbus State?

airport photoTo make your travel experience a little less stressful and speed the processing of your reimbursement payment here are some simple reminders to assist you in filling out a Travel Request Form, from Darrin Albaugh, supervisor in Business Services:
A Travel Request Form must be filled out if you are traveling outside of the college’s four-county district or if overnight lodging is needed. In order to qualify for an overnight stay you must be traveling more than 40 miles from your residence or headquarters.

When filling out the Travel Request form, even though it is an estimate, please be as accurate as possible. Please make sure to include the following costs:

  • Cost of airfare (check airline websites or travel websites such as Travelocity or Orbitz), for cost information

  • Round trip baggage costs

  • Hotel room taxes – you can call the hotel to get these charges

  • Taxi or shuttle fees from airport to/from conference site

Please complete the travel request form as early as possible to ensure that all details are covered prior to your date of departure. If the travel request is not complete, it may be returned to you for further review.

If you have additional questions about completing a Travel Request Form, contact Betty Sugar at ext. 2421.
