Textbook Affordability Summit open for registration
Columbus State, in cooperation with the Ohio Board of Regents, will present a Statewide Summit on Textbook Affordability on Friday, September 28, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Columbus State Conference Center on the fourth floor of WD.
The full-day summit will offer participants a program of keynote addresses, breakout sessions and panels on the multi-layered aspects of this issue from the perspective of its primary stakeholder groups: faculty, students, libraries, bookstores, publishers, and information technology providers. Food for Thought cookbook supports student scholarships
Looking for something new and exciting for dinner tonight? Stop by the Bookstore and pick up Food for Thought: A Recipe Collection. All recipes were contributed by Columbus State staff, faculty, students and friends. Inside you'll find an assortment of 75 recipes including soups, salads, entrees and desserts.
The cookbook is not only a way to share great food, but also an opportunity to share in the success of a Columbus State student. A portion of each sale goes to support student scholarships at Columbus State. The cost is just $5.00.
Hip Hop Institute offers The Next Big Thing
What do you get when you combine the insight of TED Talks, the creativity of Pecha Kucha, and an amazing DJ? You get The Next Big Thing: “The Principles of Hip Hop.”
The free event will be held Saturday, July 28, at 5:00 p.m. in the Columbus State Conference Center ballroom, WD 435.
If you have something to say about hip hop, you can submit a proposal to present your compelling message to help bring Columbus State’s Hip Hop Institute to a close.
Topics might include hip hop’s role in politics, teaching youth through hip hop, race/gender and hip hop, hip hop and social justice, the legacy of cultural music, or just a great moment in hip hop history. The Next Big Thing format allows you to present your topic in 20 Power Point slides lasting 15 seconds each, for a total of five minutes.

Jazz in July set for the 10th
Student Engagement and Leadership’s annual Jazz in July free concert will take place on both the Columbus and Delaware campuses on Tuesday, July 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On the Columbus Campus, the concert will be set up in the 11-S parking lot at the corner of Mt. Vernon and Cleveland Avenues.
On the Delaware Campus, the concert will be held outside on the patio at Moeller Hall. Dolly and the Governor and the Joel Steward Trio will play on the Columbus Campus, with Andrew Waters performing at Delaware. Enjoy street food vendors and great music during your lunch hour on July 10!
New photo exhibit in the Library
The Library is pleased to announce a new exhibition by photographer Mark Fohl. Fohl’s work has been accepted on numerous occasions at the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, and he has found success in the Ohio Art League and other juried exhibitions in Ohio. He was granted an Artist Residency in Dresden, Germany, and spent three months there in 2005. He was also awarded a residency at the CCA contemporary art museum in Andratx, Mallorca, Spain, and was there for six weeks in 2011. While in Spain, he discovered many interesting and rich colors. He writes, “I came to the conclusion that foreign countries are characterized not only by language and culture, but also by physical characteristics like buildings, architecture, architectural details, and color. We don’t have colors like this in Columbus, so I decided to bring them back home!”

Turn your PowerPoints into videos
Have you ever viewed a PowerPoint that has been posted online? It seems one-dimensional. There is no voice behind the slides to provide context and feedback. Consequently, a posted PowerPoint may lose some of the point of the presentation.
Why not convert your existing PowerPoint to a video (with audio recording) that can be embedded in your Blackboard course? You can actually convert from PowerPoint to video in just one click!
In this hands-on workshop, participants will convert one of their own PowerPoint presentations (so don't forget to bring one!) to a video by using a free software called iSpring. During the presentation, attendees will learn how to download the appropriate software and will discuss best practices regarding creating voice recordings on PowerPoint, as well as editing, saving, and uploading recordings into Blackboard.

Graduation Celebration planned at the Bookstore
The Columbus State Bookstore will host a Summer Quarter Graduation Celebration on Tuesday, July 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Summer Quarter grads will be able to order their caps and gowns, order graduation announcements, look at class rings, diploma frames, alumni items and enjoy light refreshments in celebration of their upcoming commencement on Friday, August 17. The very last quarter ceremony is coming up quickly!
