MAN Initiative needs mentors
The MAN Initiative is a retention program that focuses on character-building and leadership development for male students who may be at risk or have barriers to their success and attainment. The most important component of the MAN Initiative’s work is mentoring and your help is needed to ensure that program participants have great mentors who care about their success.
Did You Know that according to a Mentoring Evaluation Study conducted by the Connecticut Mentoring Partnership in 2005, of young people involved in mentoring relationships:
-
More than 50 percent reported that they have a better attitude in school, earn better grades, are well prepared for school every day and show better behavior in class
-
79 percent reported they try hard to earn their teacher’s trust and get along with their teachers
Students in the MAN Initiative are required to have regular check-ins with their academic advisor, attend a monthly cohort meeting, and aid in the planning of two major MAN Initiative events per year. In exchange for their work in the MAN Initiative, students receive a $250 scholarship per semester as well as a personal mentor and a peer mentor.
MAN Initiative is preparing for a cohort of 50 students this coming year and we can’t do this very important work without you! If you are interested in applying to mentor a student this academic year, please contact MAN Initiative at maninit@cscc.edu or 614.287.2426. All accepted mentors will receive mentor training prior to the beginning of the academic year.
Join the Pono Learning Community
In Autumn 2010, the Pono Learning Community was created to provide a space for open dialogue about diversity and social responsibility with, and among, students, staff, faculty and administrators at Columbus State. More than 50 people participated and added to the increasing number of conversations taking place across campus.
Pono (pronounced PO'-no), the word itself, means 'right' and describes that exquisite sense of rightness that comes from being at one with everything. It is based on the ancient Hawaiian belief in spirit greatness and self power, in the unconditional love and compassion for, and the spirit connections between, all things.
From Ka Hana Pono by Connie Rios
The Pono Community is looking for individuals who might be interested in joining for the 2012/2013 year. Each cohort meets for eight sessions during a semester and is led in discussions ranging from race and religion to disabilities and classism.
In the coming year, Pono will have two cohorts on the Columbus campus and one on the Delaware campus. For more information on how to apply for a spot in a Pono cohort this year, contact pono@cscc.edu or call ext. 2426.
