Jazz band “Dolly and the Governor” belts one out at Jazz in July, held Tuesday on both the Columbus and Delaware Campuses. The annual tradition brings jazz acts to perform for students, faculty, staff and the community, and is coordinated by Student Engagement and Leadership.

First-year seminar prepares students for success

student with teacherColumbus State will offer a new class called First Year Experience Seminar (COLS 1100) starting Fall Semester. The course, designed by a committee of faculty members with the assistance of student affairs staff, prepares students to successfully navigate the processes and procedures required to be a successful student at Columbus State.

COLS 1100 is a required course for all new Columbus State students, and has the second-largest number of students registered for a course for fall semester, so demand for faculty will be high.

Fulltime faculty members have the first option to teach this course. In order to teach COLS 1100, the faculty member must complete a mandatory training session. The training will include how to help students understand financial aid, academic advising, registration procedures, DARS degree audit, Cougar Web and more.

Fulltime faculty may register for one of these training sessions:
Wednesday July 25, 9:00- 11:30 a.m. (WD 009)
Thursday July 26, 2:00- 4:30 p.m. (WD 205)
Friday July 27, 1:00-3:30 p.m. (WD 304)

Because of the large number of students taking COLS 1100, we expect more demand than can be filled by full-time faculty alone. Adjunct faculty members who would like to teach COLS 1100 must also attend mandatory training.

Accreditation visit evaluators announced by HLC

Drs. Cheryl Carpenter-Davis of Metropolitan Community College in Missouri, and George Johnston of Parkland College in Illinois, will conduct the Reaffirmation of Accreditation Quality Check-up Visit September 18 - 20 at Columbus State.  The two evaluators were recently named by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the college's accrediting agency.

A total of 18 meetings are scheduled for the three-day visit.  Topics will range from quality improvement initiatives to college governance, student assessment, distance learning and federal regulatory requirements. 

At Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, Dr. Carpenter is the Dean of Instruction.  She has taught physical therapy at MCC-Penn Valley and the University of Kansas, and is active on the Johnson County, Mo. Drug and Alcohol Council. 

Dr. Johnston is an emeritus professor of Fine and Applied Arts at Parkland College where he is the Director of Institutional Research .  He also consults at the Office of Community College Research at the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana. 

Since 2006, Columbus State has been a member of the HLC's Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP).  Based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program, AQIP promotes building an improvement culture through data collection and analysis.

Carringer to race 100 miles

Assistant Professor Paul Carringer hopes the third time is a charm in his upcoming endurance running attempt. This weekend he will take part in the annual Stroehmann Back on My Feet 20 in 24 Challenge. The event involves running for 24 hours straight over an 8.2 mile course in Philadelphia.  The event raises money to assist the homeless.
Carringer’s goal is to run 100 miles. He’s only made it as far as 88 miles during two previous events but this year has upped his training regimen by 20 percent to meet his goal. Videographer Mark Van Horn spent a few minutes with him this week as he trained for big run at Park of Roses in Columbus.

Summer Quarter statistics online now

The preliminary Summer Quarter 2012 headcount and Full Time Equivalent data, as of the census date July 2, is now available online.   

After record setting enrollments during Summer 2011, the Columbus State headcount stood at 18,043 paid students for Summer 2012 compared to a Summer 2011 headcount of 19,699.  This represents an 8.41% decrease from a year ago.  Total FTE for Summer 2012 are 10079.12 compared to 11,699.22 FTE from the Summer 2011 census day report - a 13.85% decrease.  Lower average credit hours per student contributed to the larger decrease in FTE.

Warren G. Harding Symposium
America at a Crossroads:  The 1920 Presidential Campaign

logoOur partners at the Columbus State Delaware Campus, OSU Marion, will present The Warren G. Harding Symposium, an academic, social, and cultural exploration of the life and times of America's 29th president.  The symposium presents in-depth analysis and research by authors, historians, researchers, and experts on the Harding Era and related areas of interest.

The symposium is collaboration between The Ohio State University at Marion, the Ohio Historical Society, Marion Technical College, Harding Home & Memorial, and Marion County Historical Society.

The Harding Symposium will present “America at a Crossroads: The 1920 Presidential Campaign” on July 20-21. The event will explore Harding’s famous Front Porch Campaign, Democrat challenger James Cox, and the impact of millions of American women exercising their right to vote for the first time. The two-day event will feature:

  • Wine and dessert reception at the Historic Hotel Harding;

  • Guided tours of the Harding Home and Museum, the Harding Tomb,
    and the Marion County Historical Society;

  • Workshop sessions featuring noted authors and Harding researchers,

  • Gala Dinner and roundtable with keynote speaker
