Columbus State President Appoints Chief of Staff

Following a nationwide search, Columbus State Community College President David Harrison has selected an advisor to the Ohio Attorney General as his first Chief of Staff.
Kimberly Hall is currently Deputy Chief Counsel in Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office. She will now serve as an advisor to Dr. Harrison as a key member of his leadership team.

Hall’s duties will also include serving as a liaison for the Board of Trustees and facilitating Board policy, overseeing daily operations of legislative, legal, and community affairs, and providing guidance for strategic initiatives and special projects.

“Kim Hall is an experienced, talented leader, and she has a personal dedication to this community,” says Dr. Harrison. “As Chief of Staff, Kim will play an important role in communication, integration, and alignment as we advance our work to expand student access, improve student success, and strengthen our ties to the region. She will be a great partner to those at Columbus State and throughout all the communities we serve.”

As Deputy Chief Counsel, Hall has managed the Chiefs of six sections in the Attorney General’s Office: Education, Business Contracts, Taxation, Workers’ Compensation, Civil Rights and Public Utilities. In the Education section, her responsibilities included monitoring litigation and other legal issues facing Ohio’s public colleges, universities and local school districts.

Prior to her work at the AG’s office, Hall was Deputy Chief Counsel for the Ohio Department of Education. During her six-year tenure, she served as an advisor to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education.

“During my work with the education department, I discovered my passion for the field of public education administration,” says Hall. “It is now an honor to join the Columbus State community as the Chief of Staff, and I am looking forward to building quality relationships with the college’s talented faculty, staff and students. I am excited to begin applying my full energy toward advancing the college’s student success mission and strengthening Columbus State’s community partnerships.”

Early in her career, Hall served as a labor and employment attorney with the Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease firm and the Littler Mendelson firm.  She also worked as a staff attorney in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Domestic Relations and Juvenile Branch.

In her spare time, she works with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Ohio, where she serves as a board member. She is also the founder of the Olive Tree Project, a writing program for girls who have an incarcerated parent.

Hall holds a Juris Doctorate from Fordham University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University. She will begin her new position as Chief of Staff at Columbus State August 6.

Visitors from Korea meet at Columbus State

Columbus State hosted a meeting with visitors from the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training on June 29. The meeting was in conjunction with Ohio State’s Center on Education and Training for Employment. The group met with several faculty and staff members to discuss current issues in vocational education and to explore the U.S. model.

100 miles remains elusive for persistent professor

As reported here in Update last week, Assistant Professor Paul Carringer hoped his third attempt would be the charm in his effort to run 100 miles during a 24-hour fundraising run in Philadelphia over the weekend. As it turns out, he’ll have to wait until next year to attempt that feat. Carringer did, however, manage to run a full 70 miles in the event. The annual event raises money to assist the homeless.

Graduating basketball team members earn full scholarships to four-year schools

It’s another big score for the Columbus State men’s basketball team. While one player – Glenn Cosey – achieved a new school scoring record and was named the conference player of the year, the team itself set a new academic mark. Seven players have signed full scholarships at four-year schools, with two of them set to play in Division I.

“It’s awesome to have seven kids from one community college team earn full scholarships,” says Coach Pat Carlisle. “It shows our rigorous program paid off. Coaches helped oversee the academic plans for each player and they provided advice and support throughout the year. It’s simply amazing and another one of those bench marks that proves the Columbus State Men's basketball team is among the national elite.”

Last Day To Submit Invoices For FY 2012 is July 27

We are quickly wrapping up accounting for FY12 and all invoices must be received in Accounting by July 27 in order to be payed from a FY12 account. Please remember, goods must have been received by June 30, 2012 for any invoices paid with FY12 funds.

A few related issues:

INSUFFICIENT FUNDS:
If you do not have sufficient funds in an account to pay a FY12 invoice, contact Ann Helfrich at AHELFRIC@cscc.edu, to assist with a budget transfer.

GRANT ACCOUNTS:
Grant accounts will follow the same deadline as the College. The only exception to the purchase order deadline is if the Grant does not end on June 30th. Please contact your Grant accounting representative if you have questions or require additional processing time for grant invoices.

PORC:
If an item was received prior to June 30th and you are using PORC to receive the item you will need to change the receive date to June 30th to ensure the funds used to pay the invoice are from the FY12 budget.

TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT:
Travel-related reimbursement requests must be submitted by July 30th.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Tuition reimbursement payments are not subject to this deadline and can be processed per guidelines established by Human Resources.
