A seasoned fundraising professional has arrived at Columbus State to oversee the Columbus State Foundation. Pam Bishop began her role February 18 as the Foundation’s new Executive Director.

First Wednesday date moved for March
The next meeting of “First Wednesdays” will actually be on a Tuesday next month! The monthly town hall meeting and Staff Employee of the Month presentation with President Harrison will be held on Tuesday, March 5 at 8:15 a.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom (WD fourth floor). All employees are invited to attend.
Columbus State Day: Help us showcase what we do!
Recently in UPdate we told you about our exciting plans for Columbus State’s 50th Anniversary. One of our key events will be Columbus State Day, when we invite the community to come see what we do best—educate! But first we need your help.
Mark your calendars now—Columbus State Day will be held on October 12, 2013. Set against a festival backdrop, visitors of all ages will have opportunities to participate in demonstrations, workshops, experiments, classes, and other fun activities that highlight our knowledge and expertise across the college.
For example, did you know that your tires essentially have an expiration date? On Columbus State Day, visitors can learn how to become a “Tire Whisperer” with the Automotive Technology department. Meanwhile, over in Biological and Physical Sciences, children can visit the Moovin’ and Groovin’ Dance Party to learn how their muscles help them move. And much, much more…
Here’s where you come in. We want to involve the entire college community in making sure this is the best day it can be, and that means we need your help brainstorming ways to showcase all of the great things we offer here at Columbus State. If you could attend an event like this, what would draw you in and get you excited? What areas on campus would you like to visit? What would you love to learn?
Would you like to see the Criminal Justice Department offer a fingerprint-lifting demonstration? Have Business Programs give you a primer on what it takes to own your own business? Learn how to use psychological techniques to win an argument from the Psychology Department? We want to hear your ideas at http://ow.ly/hEwiN. OATYC conference calls for proposals
The Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges (OATYC) has announced a call for proposals for its annual conference on October 11, 2013 at Stark State College. The theme for the conference is "Navigating the Pathways for Student Success." Proposals are due by Friday, April 5, 2013. Appropriate proposals meeting this theme might address the following:

Acceleration of the progress of developmental students

Change to OSCHE presentation March 1
All Columbus State employees are invited to attend the Ohio Staff Council of Higher Education (OSCHE) Winter Meeting Friday, March 1, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in WD Room 409 to hear David Cannon, Ohio’s Vice Chancellor of Finance, speak about recent changes to college and university budgets. There will be a Q&A period following the presentation. The presentation will be live streamed as well, and archived with closed captioning. Board authorizes sale of golf course to KIPP Central Ohio
As announced last week, the Columbus State Board of Trustees has authorized the potential sale of Bridgeview Golf Course and Driving Range to KIPP Central Ohio, a charter school organization that advances K-12 educational opportunities with a primary focus on college readiness.
The 123.5-acre Bridgeview site at 2727 and 2738 Agler Road was donated to Columbus State through a trust agreement in 2000. The college has operated Bridgeview as a public golf course and driving range and has offered golf and other classes at the site.
“The changing financial landscape of higher education compels us to focus our resources on our core mission of helping students achieve their goals and addressing the region’s workforce needs,” said President Harrison. “This arrangement will help children and families, will bolster the surrounding community, and will enable us to better align our resources with our priorities.”
KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in under-served communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 125 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving more than 39,000 students.
"We are thrilled about the opportunity to serve more children in Columbus and provide an educational experience that will ensure more young people in our community make it to and through college. We look forward to working with the community to collectively build a better tomorrow for our children and families through expanded partnerships, services, and educational offerings," said Hannah Powell, Executive Director of KIPP Central Ohio. Columbus State will continue to operate the golf course and driving range until further notice.
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 25-28
Counseling Services, Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL), the Psychology Department and the Ohio Psychological Association will join forces this week to offer “OPERATION B-You-tiful” on campus. Here is the schedule:

“Someday Melissa” documentary screening
View a movie about an eating disorder, loss and hope. Melissa was only 19 when she died after a five-year struggle with an eating disorder. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion about these disorders. 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Franklin Hall Room 104

Body Image Information Table
Join SEaL and Counseling Services to learn more about developing a positive body image. Pick up helpful resources and literature on self-esteem, self-worth, and having a positive view of your body. Fairy Goodmother Dress Donation and Fashion Show
Bring like-new prom and party dresses to Nestor Hall and donate them to a good cause! Fairy Goodmothers is an organization devoted to providing formal gowns, shoes and accessories to high school girls from low income families that cannot afford to purchase these items on their own.
