Performing the arts in the Lincoln!

Last Tuesday’s inclement weather held off just long enough for the first in the Performing Arts Series—the Columbus State Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble—to perform at the historic Lincoln Theatre. The Theatre provided a beautiful setting for the works of woman composers, performed by the bands in honor of Women’s History Month. The next concert in the series is Chorus Columbus State performing Spirituals and a Touch of Jazz on Monday, March 25 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.  All concerts are free and open to the public.

High school students invited to College Exploration Night March 19 in Delaware

High school juniors, sophomores and freshmen will have one-stop shopping for five college options next week at College Exploration Night on the Delaware Campus.

Representatives from five institutions will talk about college choices to help ease the transition for high school students who must soon begin making higher education plans. Following the program, staff members from each school will be available for questions.

During the 90-minute program, representatives from Columbus State, The Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Otterbein University and The Ohio State University Marion will each highlight opportunities at their institutions.

College Exploration Night is Tuesday, March 19 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Moeller Hall. 

New ways to earn wellness points help maintain health care rates

logoIf you were able to attend one of the information sessions sponsored by Human Resources last week, you discovered there are new ways to achieve the minimum eight health and wellness points for your United Health Care (UHC) coverage. The points are tallied between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.

First, you may recall, there was some overlap. While this year’s points began collecting on July 1, 2012, last year’s points didn’t actually end until September 30, 2012.
So, here’s some good news: If you received points in July, August or September last year, they count for both years. Say you went to the doctor for your physical on July 15, 2012. That single point for the visit counted for last year’s points and it will also count for this year’s points.

There are also new ways to earn points. In the past, you received two points for a visit to the dentist for a complete dental screening and cleaning. Now, if you make a second visit you get one additional point for a total of three points.

For online wellness programs there is now a new cap of two points. Previously it was one point.

In the category of Staying Healthy Activities (flu immunization, mammography, cervical cancer screening, colon cancer screening, prostate cancer screening, and bone density screening) there is now a cap of three points, up from two. If you received a flu shot during October’s In Service Day, you will automatically receive your point. If you received it at a doctor’s office or a clinic, submit documentation and you’ll receive one point. (Due to a system change at UHC, your point for a flu shot may not be posted until after the current period ends on June 30. As long as you have proof that you received the shot, you will get the point.)

Watch for additional health and wellness information in coming weeks. An additional information session is set for later this month on Wednesday, March 27 at noon in CT 017. Remember, employees who fail to earn the eight required points will see their annual portion of health care costs rise to 30 percent from the current 20 percent.

For those on the family plan, only the employee of Columbus State is currently required to achieve the health and wellness points. That will change on July 1. From that point and going forward, spouses covered under the UHC health plan will be required to participate in order to remain at the 20 percent contribution level.

Chronicle survey coming later in March
Columbus State will once again participate in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work For” survey. This annual study helps colleges assess workplace quality, culture and employee satisfaction, and enables comparison to similar institutions. Combined with the 2012 data, the survey will provide a foundation and baseline for measuring quality improvements.

Part of the study includes a survey completed by a random sample of 600 employees. Beginning March 18, employees in this sample will receive an email and instructions directing them to an online survey. If you receive the invitation, please take several minutes to complete the survey. The survey window will be open between March 18 and April 15.

To ensure the confidentiality of your responses, your survey will be processed by ModernThink LLC, a research and consulting firm focusing on workplace excellence. Our institution will not be given any information that would enable us to trace survey data back to any one individual. Your responses are confidential and your participation and honest feedback are encouraged. A high response rate helps ensure accurate results and demonstrates our commitment to our institution and the communities we serve.

Rezin, Popovich present at Economic-Education Summit

Dr. Andrew Rezin, chair of Automotive and Applied Technologies, and Jack Popovich, assistant professor and program coordinator of Finance, were two of more than 50 industry and education leaders making presentations at the State Economic-Education Summit February 27.

During the industry sector panel discussions, they provided information on skill gaps and best practices related to improving workforce development in Ohio. Rezin spoke on the Automotive Panel Discussion, and Popovich was a member of the Financial Services panel.

The Summit is conducted annually to help education and industry relationships, and enhance workforce development programming aligned with future business needs. The 2013 Summit focused on 10 industries identified by Governor John Kasich’s administration as critical to improve Ohio’s economy: aerospace/aviation, agribusiness, automotive, bio-health, energy (renewable, oil/gas), financial services, health, information technology, manufacturing and polymers/chemicals. More than 350 people attended the Summit.

Cougar Challenge 5K registration now open!

logoSave the date for Saturday, April 27, when the Second Annual Cougar Challenge 5K will race through the streets of Downtown Columbus in the Discovery District! Help the Staff Advisory Council raise money for book scholarships by running or walking in the 2013 Cougar Challenge. The race fee is $25 in advance, or $35 on race day. You can register three ways:

Hills Market to open on Grant St. near campus

logoThe Downtown version of the longtime local and organic food market, which has been in the works since 2011, is set to open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19.
At 95 N. Grant Ave., the 12,000-square-foot former auto repair shop is a few blocks north of Downtown and several blocks south of the Columbus State campus, hoping to draw customers from both areas.

Like its north Columbus sibling, the Downtown market features local and organic produce and prepared foods and grocery items, as well as prepared foods that are unique to Hills Market, such as its Hills Own pizza, rotisserie chicken and meat loaf. It offers artisan cheeses and charcuterie from around Ohio and the world.

Earlier this month final touches were going into The Hills Market in a former auto repair business on Grant St.

The store also has bakery, meat, fish, dairy, deli and frozen food departments. It offers a salad bar, as well as sushi and breakfast items, such as Silver Bridge coffees from Gallipolis, Ohio. Customers can eat at indoor and outdoor seating areas.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new store will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by free samples from dozens of Ohio vendors.

Get a Meal-to-Go during Women’s Herstory Month

March Employee Resource Group meetings announced
