The 2013 Quality Awards—Staff Employee of the Year, Distinguished Teaching Awards, Distinguished Full Professor Awards, and Quality Team Awards—were named at a luncheon ceremony held June 20 in the Conference Center and livestreamed to the rest of campus.

The Quality Awards recognize the efforts of our faculty, staff and administration for setting standards of continuous improvement that produce measurable annual goals and contribute to the College’s accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission.

The Distinguished Teaching Awards are given to faculty members nominated by their students for excellence in the classroom and reviewed by their peers for course content, instructional methods, knowledge of the subject matter and more. This year’s winners are Beth Barnett, Professor in Developmental Mathematics; Dr. Rick Bartlett, Associate Professor in Business Management; Eric Kenz, Instructor in Biological Sciences; and Fauna Stout, Assistant Professor in Medical Assisting Technology.

The Staff Employee of the Year was selected from the past 12 Employees of the Month for displaying outstanding teamwork, going above and beyond their work description, and making contributions to the college.  The 2013 Staff Employee of the Year is Susan Thomas, representative in the Telephone Information Center, who was originally nominated by a student and his parent to recognize her outstanding assistance with enrollment and registration right through to the student’s graduation.

The Distinguished Full Professor Awards were established to recognize tenured professors at the college who have contributed outstanding service to their department, to the College and to their profession. It also recognizes those who have completed scholarly work, teaching innovations, student advising, and community service that represents Columbus State. The 2013 Distinguished Full Professors are Dr. Jeffrey Bates, Professor of Environmental Science, Safety and Health; Kelly Hogan, Professor of Developmental Education; Dr. Brenda Johnson, Professor of Veterinary Technology; Steven O’Neal, Professor of Landscape Design and Management; and Darrell Minor, Professor of Mathematics.

The final awards of the afternoon were the Quality Team Awards, which recognize cross-functional teams for their yearlong projects to enhance or improve one or more of the college’s values.  Thirteen teams submitted applications for the 2013 awards.

Silver Awards were given to two teams, the Columbus Africentric Early College High School Bootcamp Team—who designed a program to improve high school students’ results on the COMPASS Placement Tests; and the Columbus State Course Evaluation System Team—who developed a campus-wide online course evaluation tool that met the needs of faculty and solved numerous problems with the older system.

The Gold Award went to The Future Scientists of Ohio Team, who sought to increase the recruitment and retention of students pursuing Associate of Science degrees and transferring to four-year institutions in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The team partnered with OSU and the Board of Regents to create the very successful pilot program.
