Darla Van Horn was nominated for the Staff Employee of the Month by Disability Services coworkers Marie Potts and Jerrilyn Heine.
Three AQIP Action Projects have been approved by Cabinet and the Accreditation Committee, and have been posted on the Higher Learning Commission website for 2014. The projects are the Early Alert, Institutional Reporting, and Reverse Transfer projects.

Barnhart play recounts Kennedy assassination 50 years later
It’s been a half century since the nation witnessed President John Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas. To recount the defining moment that changed America, Theatre Columbus State presents “A Friday in November: The JFK Assassination Remembered.”
Theater instructor Frank Barnhart wrote the docudrama using news stories, eyewitness testimony and historical documents. A portion of the story includes the man who shot the now infamous film – Abraham Zapruder. Video elements and photographs are featured prominently in the background as the story unfolds on the same weekend of the assassination - 50 years later.
The intense drama required close character studies for some of the actors. “I would grab my script and watch interviews of her for hours and repeat back the exact words that she would say until I thought I got it right,” says Sharon Kibe, who plays Jackie Kennedy in the play.
“It’s still recent history so I had a lot of material to work with, says Barnhart. “There are a lot of television interviews from the time period and of course the Warren Commission report.”
“A Friday in November” will be performed nightly at 8:00 p.m. November 20 through 23 in Nestor Hall Auditorium. There are additional matinees at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 21, and 12:45 p.m. Friday, November 22. Admission is free.

Faculty “name readers” needed for Graduation Dec. 6

Several faculty members are needed to read the names of each graduating student as they cross the stage to receive their diplomas Friday, December 6, at the Celeste Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds.
A member of the faculty from each “section” of graduates—there are three sections alphabetically listed from Accounting through Veterinary Technology and AA/AS—will march in the student lines at graduation, take the stage in order, and read each student’s name as they are presented a card. After finishing each section, the faculty readers are then seated on stage for the duration of the ceremony.
Approximately 250 graduates will march in each section, and the entire ceremony takes about two hours from start (10:00 a.m.) to finish. Dental Hygiene students protect Basketball Cougars’ teeth!
Columbus State’s second-year Dental Hygiene students recently worked with their faculty to complete a project fabricating sports mouth guards for the Columbus State Men’s Basketball team. The project was part of the students’ community service practicum in the program. Interestingly, research has indicated that basketball players have the highest rate of facial and dental injuries in sports. Although the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) doesn’t mandate mouth guards for players, the Cougars are now safely protecting their smiles! Supervising the students in the project were Beth Vetter, RDH and Daniel Collins, DDS.
